Murudeshwara (ಮುರುಡೇಶ್ವರ ) is another name of Lord Shiva.
Story behind the place/ Sthala Purana ( ಸ್ಥಳಪುರಾಣ ) :-
Lord Shiva’s ‘Atmalinga‘ (ಆತ್ಮಲಿಂಗ ) or ‘PraanaLinga’, was worshipped by all Gods and Goddesses to get their wishes fulfilled. Ravana, who was termed as a great Bhakta/Devotee of Lord Shiva decided to get the Atmalinga of Shiva so that he could become immortal. Hence he went to Kailasa and performed penance strictly following all the procedures as needed.
Lord Shiva was pleased by this and appeared before him and asked for the boon. Ravana as decided asked for the atmalinga.. Shiva , though was perplexed, had to grant it due to his promise. However he told Ravana to hold the linga carefully till home not even leaving it on the ground for a second, otherwise, it will be fixed permanently in the place where its kept. Narada, the sage explained this to all Gods including Lord Vishnu, who suggested to pray Lord Ganeshji is the best suitable person to handle this situation. Since Ravana was the most sincere devotee of Lord Shiva, he performed all rites during day-hours and was approaching toward Gokarna, meanwhile, Lord Vishnu with his Sudarshana Chakra masked Sun as though it appeared like evening-night hours. Hence he wanted to perform evening puja procedures, but cannot place the linga on the ground.. At the moment, Lord Ganesha came in the form of young brahmin ‘Vatu’ or ‘Brahmachari’.Ravana seeked his help by letting the linga to be held for quite sometime till he completes his bath.’Vatu’ said that he will utter loud Ravana’s name thrice if he comes by then he will give the linga back or else would place it on ground and go away. Agreeing to this Ravana went for a bath. But Ganesha in form of brahmin uttered the name thrice and just kept in on the ground. This enraged Ravana who returned from bath and tried to pull the ‘Atmalinga’ forcibly from the ground, but as per the promises of Lord Shiva, it got fixed permanently in the ground. That place is currently called as ‘MURUDESHWARA‘ or ‘Murdeshwara’. Even to this day, we can find the linga shape appearing twisted in the form of ear, due to the force applied by Ravana to pull it back, going by the legends associated. That place is called ‘Gokarna‘ (ಗೋಕರ್ಣ.. Govu –> means Cow and KarNa –> means ‘ear’ ) The five places the linga fell were :: Sajjeshwara, Dhareshwara, Gokarna, Gunavantheshwara and Murudeshwara.
Another legend according to ‘Shri Guru Charitre’ related to ‘Atma Linga’ on why Ravana needed atma-linga:
There is another legend/history that says that Ravana’s parents , mother Kaikasi and father Vishrava maharishi were great devotees of Lord Shiva and they both were performed lots of pooja procedures.. Once it happened that they didnt find ‘Linga’ of Lord shiva and his mother made a ‘linga ‘ shape out of mud/soil and was worshipping it, while Ravana came and said to his mother that if she really wished, he can rather get Lord Shiva’s ‘Atmalinga’ or ‘PraaNalinga’ itself rather than the linga worshipped made out of mud, saying that he threw the linga made out of mud. Then he went to Penace or perfomed tapa to get Lord shiva’s atmalinga..
