It is situated in the western Ghats, in the banks of the river ‘Souparnika’. It is in the mid of the thick reserved forests, even to this day, Western Ghat section has its own awesome and marvellous evergreen , natural beauty. Goddess Kolluru Mookambika is said to be a sangama of Shiva and Shakthi. She is a Shakti devathe and Kolluru is also one of the Shakthi Peetas.
History behind the name ‘Mookambika’:
Once there lived a king called ‘Kamhasura’ who was ruling over the kollur kingdom. He was very unjust, cruel and greedy. Injustice prevailed in the land and the people were very unhappy with his rule. Once he prayed Lord shiva to give him long life. But Goddess Shri Devi/Parvathi/Gowri consort of Lord Shiva knew this fact and before he could request for the boon, she stopped him from talking, by making him dumb. ‘Mooka’ means dumb in kannada. Hence the name Shri Mookambika to the place.
Mahishaasura ::: Just like ‘Kamhasura’ there was another demon king called ‘Mahishaasura’ who was distant relative of Kamhasura, he came to the kingdom and impressed by the beauty of the place which is surrounded by lot of greenery and natural beauty ( even till date!) wanted to make the place his kingdom’s capital.. He was more powerful and conquered the places whichever he wished & liked to conquer ..
In the same place, there were many sages like Maharshi Kola and his disciples who performed penances and pooja rituals to gods and goddesses for the welfare of the people.. Mahishaasura disturbed all their homa/havana/ pooja rituals with ease, and destroyed all the auspicious ceremonies.. He used to even kill innocent people living there, their houses were destroyed and their cows and cattles were killed.. Entire kingdom went disturbed and all sages prayed the trimurthis to help them. ‘Trimurthis’ combined divine powers were given to ‘Adi-Parashakthi’ or ‘Om-Shakthi’ or ‘Mookambika’ ( Shakthi is again the combination of Goddesses MahaKaaLi , Mahalakshmi and goddess Maha saraswathi’ ) and in a very fierce battle she killed Mahishaasura. This battle is said to have taken place at a place called ‘MaaraNaKatte’ near to Kolluru ( Few kms away ) ..
The sage Kola requested the Devi ( Mookambika/ Vaishnavi ) to be situated in that place as a mark of victory of Good over the Evil and she is said to be there ever since then…
AnnasantarpaNe /ಅನ್ನಸಂತರ್ಪಣೆ :: Thousands of devotees throng to the temple from both Karnataka and Kerala states and everyday there will be annasantarpaNe or prasada meal or prasadam lunch provided to the devotees who visit the place..
First On-Stage performances / ರಂಗ ಪ್ರವೇಶ :: When we visited the temple we could see many girls who dressed up in bharatanatyam and other dance form costumes before they perform their first time dance called ‘RangaPravesha’ in kannada or ‘Arangetram’ in Tamil or first classical style On-Stage performance, to seek blessings of the Goddess.
Vidyarambham/ ಅಕ್ಷರಾಭ್ಯಾಸ/ ವಿದ್ಯಾರಂಭ: Devotees also do their kids vidyarambham or akshara-bhyasam in the temple premises during Saraswathi Puje (Of navarathri ) or any auspicious days..
Popular Singer Shri K J Yesudas is a greatest devotee of Goddess Mookambika and makes a visit to the temple every year and he is said to have donated many offerings to the Goddess.
It is also said that the Devi’s sword / ಖಡ್ಗ is donated by the famous tamil actor of yester years Shri. M.G.R, who again was the greatest devotee of the Goddess.
