Cucumber Gojju & Ragi Rotti(ರಾಗಿ ರೊಟ್ಟಿ ಮತ್ತು ಸೌತೆಕಾಯಿ ಗೊಜ್ಜು ಮಾಡುವ ವಿಧಾನ) recipe

Gojju is a popular, traditional side dish of Karnataka and it is very old side dish.. No other side dish can beat that of Gojju.. It is an awesome amalgamation of Sweet, Salt, Sour, bitter ( if Haagalakaayi or bitter gourd or Karela is used ) , spicy.. and it satisfies our taste buds with perfect combination of all possible taste and flavour.. Usually gojju is made using saarina pudi or menasina pudi , for some gojjus, however, we freshly fry items and grind and I will post those recipes separately… But below gojju recipe is that of my grandmom’s which is made in instant..

Ingredients needed:

Southekaayi or cucumber – 2 big or 3 small — Chopped finely or like that of palya & boil it.
Tamarind pulp – 1/2 cup
Jaggery – 1 lemon sized piece


Ref oil – 4-5 tspns
Mustard – 1 tsp
Jeera – 1 tsp

Dry roast and grind:

Kadale BeLe – 2 tbspns
biLi Yellu ( White til ) seeds – 1 tbspn
Methi seeds – 1 tspn
Red chillies – Around 7 – 8 byadgi variety
Curry leaves ( Only while grinding and not to dry roast )


[1] Dry roast with a tea spoon of refined oil 2 tablespoons of kadale beeLe ( Or bengal gram ) until it slightly changes its color

[2] Now dry roast 1/4 spoon of menthya or methi seeds until it slightly changes color

[3] Now dry roast 8 – 10 dry chillies until it slightly changes color.. Keep aside all 1, 2, 3 and allow it to cool..

[4] Now grind kadalebeLe, Methi, dry chillies from steps 1,2,3 along with 1 tablespoon of YeLLu or white til seeds ( already roasted slightly) and add little water and wet grind with fresh coconut grated or dry coconut thuri ( VoNa kobbari thuri) with few curry leaves.

[5] Heat oil in pan, add mustard, Jeera, ground paste from step 4, boil well, add 1/2 cup water, tamarind pulp, boiled southekayi pieces and boil for few minutes again.. While boiling add a small piece of jaggery…

[6] Serve with Chapathi or rice or even akki/ragi Rotti, if preferred.


Some useful tips::

  • One can add 2 tspns of red chilli powder if they feel that above red chillied roasted gojju isnt much spicy.. or can use 3-4 guntur chilli variety and grind post roasting..
  • One can also grind 1 tomato with other ingredients for nice color and taste..

ರಾಗಿ ರೊಟ್ಟಿ ಮಾಡುವ ವಿಧಾನ:

ಒಂದು ಅಗಲವಾದ ಪಾತ್ರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಕಪ್ ಅಷ್ಟು ರಾಗಿ ಹಿಟ್ಟು, ಎರಡರಿಂದ ಮೂರು ಸಣ್ಣಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿದ ಈರುಳ್ಳಿ, ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕೊತ್ತಂಬರಿ ಸೊಪ್ಪು, ನಾಲ್ಕು ಚಮಚ ಕಾಯಿ ತುರಿ, ಉಪ್ಪು, ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕರಿಬೇವು, ಒಂದು ಚಮಚ ಜೀರಿಗೆ, ಎರಡು ಹಸಿಮೆಣಸಿನಕಾಯಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿದ್ದು, ಇವೆಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಿಕ್ಸ್ ಮಾಡಿ, ನೀರಿನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಕಲಸಿ.. ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಸಮಯದ ನಂತರ, ಬಾಣಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಥವಾ ಕಾವಲಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಎಣ್ಣೆ ಸವರಿ ರೊಟ್ಟಿ ತಟ್ಟಿ, ಎಣ್ಣೆ ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ಹಾಕಿ,  ಎರಡೂ ಬದಿ ಬೇಯಿಸಬೇಕು…
