Ribbon Chips Recipe- (ರಿಬ್ಬನ್ ಚಿಪ್ಸ್ ಮಾಡುವ ವಿಧಾನ)

Apart from chakkuli, kodubaLe, sev etc, my grandmother makes another variety of snack which is another form of chakkuli.. The same is called with different names like ‘ribbon chips’ or ‘ribbon pakoda’ or ‘ribbon tengolalu’ etc since the shape resembles that of a ribbon, but the taste would be somewhat similar to chakkuli.. It can be prepared instantly as a coffee/tea time evening snacks and also could be munched along with lunch as a side item…


Ingredients Needed:

Rice Flour/Akki Hittu  ಅಕ್ಕಿ ಹಿಟ್ಟು- 1 Cup
Kadale hittu or besan or Gram flour ಕಡಲೆ ಹಿಟ್ಟು – 3/4th to nearly 1 cup, but not more than 1 cup( always less than rice flour quantity)
Hing or asafoetida ಇಂಂಗು – a pinch
Salt as needed ಉಪ್ಪು
Jeera or cumin – 1 tsp ಜೀರಿಗೆ
Om kaaLu or ajwain seeds – 1 tsp  ಓಂ
Ellu or til seeds -1 tsp ಎಳ್ಳು
Red chilli powder – 1.5 tspns ಅಚ್ಚು ಕಾರದ ಪುಡಿ
Hot oil -3 tbspns or a pinch of soda
Oil to Deep fry ಕರಿಯಲು ಎಣ್ಣೆ


[1] Mix all the ingredients mentioned above to a dough similar to that of chapathi dough.. ( that is neither too thick nor too watery)

[2] Keep aside for 15-20 minutes, meanwhile heat oil for deep frying..

[3] Take a chakkuli maker or press and insert the disc with a single long line or long hole in the middle or some discs will also have two adjacent lines… (Can use both/either to make this)

[4] Drop a fistful of dough inside, and press on the hot oil directly.. But be little careful while doing this since we are directly frying on hot oil.. Deep fry on both the sides till light brown color in medium to low flame only.. It may get burnt if high flame is used continuously…

[5] Cool and serve with coffee/tea or as lunch box side item…
