Naagara panchami–

Tannire haala taniyereyona taaya haalaruna teeripa inde punyadina..

–this verse is from a song in Kannada movie named Devaru kotta thangi  which summarizes about celebration of  Nagara panchami festival,  which clearly describes the bondage between brother and sister in our Hindu culture…

What is done on the festival day??

Nagara panchami is celebrated across some parts of India, specially in Karnataka … I don’t think there is any Kannadiga who hasnt heard the above song… It is said that the DNA has a complex structure and the bonding between brother and sister is also more important and it is in the form of a serpant(Naga) like structure , hence on this day raw milk is smeared by sister to brother on naval area and back spinal cord parts to keep it cool.. In return the brother returns gifts to his sister , say, money or any present and well wishes his sister.. If the sister is elder to brother , he will seek blessings from sister and vice versa… Also tamboola or coconut-betel leaves, arecanuts with a fruit is exchanged between the two..

Pooja to Lord subramanya ::

In addition to brother sister custom, we also do pooja to silver nagappa or subramanya, by pouring raw milk, water, soaked or fried kadale kaLu as per one’s family custom, Arisina kumkuma, gandhakshate, flowers, gejje vastra etc..

In South Karnataka we prepare kaayi kadubu , steamed version of kadubu and kaarada kadubu as per one’s family custom… Some people prepare nucchina vunde or steamed dumplings along with gasagase payasa or any other payasa , but strictly no deep fried or shallow fried items are prepared… Hence all the above mentioned foods are only steamed and not fried..

In North Karnataka , many varieties of sweet balls or vundes are prepared like besan vunde, shenga vunde, yeLLu vunde etc…
